Evil Dead Trap DVD (NTSC Region 1)

EVIL DEAD TRAP – Toshihara Ikeda’s 1988 is more than just a garish gorefest. Inspired by the best of Dario Argento’s work (indeed, the driving score is delightfully derivative of Goblin’s scores for Argento), the film is certainly awash with gore and spiked with a particularly nasty and lengthy rape scene. And yet: There comes a point at the end of the film
when a transgressive, almost metaphysical feeling comes out from amongst the blood-soaked and creatively executed (and often sexualized) death scenes. High art EDT is not, but unlike the endless shitheap of slasher films that turned young minds to tapioca in the early ’80s and live in the form of the pre-fabricated teens flicks that pass for horror movies today, the film has a dark-grain element of the fantastique running through it that rightfully earns EDT its cult status.
