Sakuya - Slayer of Demons (NTSC All Region)
SAKUYA: DEMON SLAYER - In 1707 AD, Mt. Fuji erupts. Creeping out from the heart of the volcano are legions of demons and monsters, many of them with less than good intentions. At the same time, Sakaki, the great warrior and defender for the people against the armies of darkness, is slain by the Great Goblin of Tone River. Six months later, Sakaki’s daughter, the very young and brave Lady Sakuya, has no choice but to take over (and take up arms), to follow in the footsteps of her father, and defend the land from the hordes of evil demons rummaging about. Accompanied by young Taro, a water spirit, and two ninja warriors of dubious talent, Sakuya hits the road. Her adventures take the form of a series of heroic battles with a multitude of surreal (and rubbery) creatures that only get wilder and more twisted. These conflicts are only a multitude of obstacles Sakuya and friends will face as she tries to reach her goal, the feared Mt. Fuji, which is the epicentre of the Kusanagi clan. Heads of the Kingdom of Darkness, they conspire with their master, the dreaded Queen, a massive spider-woman who has nothing but the most evil and sinister intentions for the land. Directed by Tomoo Haraguchi, without a doubt one of the best special make-up effects artists in Japan, SAKUYA is a grandiose fantasy. Its visual ambition is undeniable, especially when you consider the insane parade of monsters that is brought forth, reaching its heights upon a visit to a magical forest, haunted by a gaggle of creatures (including a surreal umbrella-monster that has to be seen to be believed), that improvise an odd musical number that will not leave your memory any time soon. Ranging from the most sophisticated of digital effects to the massive amount of impressive creature make-ups, all is done in the purest tradition of Japanese fantasy cinema (particularly lending homage to the ghost stories produced by the famous Toei Studios in the '50s and '60s). The fantasy universe of this film was so elaborate, that not only did it necessitate the collaboration of all the top special effects artists from its native land (a first), it was also financed by the American Warner Brothers Studios (a first as well). SAKUYA is a film that is entranced by a fresh spirit and positive atmosphere. It is also the first film directed by the ultra-talented Haraguchi, who here seems to clearly savour the opportunity to now direct in the cinematographic genre that he is so clearly passionate about without limits. It is also worth noting that the great filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto (BULLET BALLET, GEMINI) is present as an actor, playing with extreme relish the role of the “Puppetmaster”, and that the music is by cult composer Kenji Kawai (GHOST IN THE SHELL, RING), who delivers beautifully hypnotic notes to embellish the unique, dreamy world of SAKUYA.
