As the attacks multiply, the King becomes desperate to end the fear and delegates Gregoire de Frosnac, a renowned scientist, and Mani, a Mohawk Indian, to hunt and destroy the beat. When the king grows dissatisfied with the lack of success, he dispatches his own lieutenant to he hunt. The lieutenant returns hastily, claiming he has killed the beast. The King orders Frosnac and Mani to retire their efforts. Questioning the claim and disobeying the King's orders, they organize one last hunt. Nothing could have prepared them for what they discover.
