| Back in 1985, when this British television production was made,residents of the world feared a nuclear war was just around the corner.Television and film capitalized on this fear but churning out films bothgood (TESTAMENT) and bad (the limp THE DAY AFTER). No film of the period orsince has topped THREADS for intensity and realism (though its cinematicparent, Peter Watkins' superb THE WAR GAME, comes close). One could neverimagine a U.S. television film attacking such a sensitive issue with suchpainfully graphic realism. THREADS doesn't shy away from the realities ofnuclear war, and over 15 years on its impact has not be lessened in theleast. (A bit of trivia: British anarcho-punk band Conflict used the 'Youcannot win a nuclear war!' sound sample to great effect on theirmasterpiece release, 'The Ungovernable Force' LP).
