Pupi Avati's 1976 film is often lumped in with the giallo boom
that was petering out by the time it was released (that is, if it's mentioned at
all). Considering that it has never gotten a US video release and it hasn't been
released with English subtitles in any world video market, the only way to see
this film was some crap bootleg that flooded out the gorgeous warmth of the
cinematography with the washed-out grain of the umpteenth generation copy. At
long last this film is being afforded the release it deserves: as a sumptuous
English subtitled Italian special edition DVD. The film is not a gialli, but
rather a creepy and intelligent horror film about an artist sent to a remote
locale to restore an old fresco that the was originally painted by a tortured (ummm...literally)
artist. The longer he works on the restoration, the more he finds out about the
artist, his demise and those who were behind it. From its haunting opening
titles sequence to its final series of shocks, Avati's film is not only his
finest work, but a film to stand beside Dario Argento's strongest efforts of the
'70s.
