HENRI LANGLOIS: THE PHANTOM OF THE CINEMATHEQUE, an in-depth look at the life and times of the legendary French archivist and film connoisseur. Henri Langlois, co-founder with Georges Franju of the Cinematheque Francaise in Paris in 1936, the world’s first film archive, was an enormously curious and classically rumpled film aficionado who fought film’s disposable status (during a period when most prints were junked after use) by saving everything. Joined by the equally eccentric Mary Meerson, over the course of 40 years Langlois hid thousands of films from the Nazis, saved silent era classics from oblivion (THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI) and championed the work of once-forgotten stars (LOUISE BROOKS, GLORIA SWANSON) and American genre directors (HOWARD HAWKS, NICHOLAS RAY). PHANTOM OF THE CINEMATHEQUE tells the remarkable story of the "Father of the New Wave," the man credited with making Paris the center of the film culture, who schooled Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Eric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol, all of whom appear on screen. In the spring of 1968, Langlois’s dismissal by a government bureaucrat from the position he had created inspired a demonstration at the Cinematheque that helped to ignite the vehement Paris street protests that soon followed.
