From its origins as a small and closed underground environment, Norwegian Black Metal has become a world-wide cult phenomenon, and is envelopped in myths, particularly with regard to the genre-defining band, Mayhem. With its focus firmly set on the early 90’s, where churches were burned down and many suicides took place, causing much controversy in Norway and, later on, newspaper headlines across the globe, and culminating in the murder of Øystein Aarseth by Varg “Greven” Vikernes, the film, “Once Upon a Time in Norway”, investigates the phenomenon in a calm and sober style. The film does not take advantage of the clearly controversial aspects of the phenomenon, even with regard to its use of images. All the persons, who are interviewed in the film, speak in a way, which they have never done before, talking candidly about their experiences and the past.
