Acclaimed director Nicolas Roeg (of WALKABOUT and MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH fame) directed this adult horror drama in 1973. While the plot can seem confused and muddled at times (thanks in part to Roeg's famed editing style), the visual elements are superb, creating a genuinely creepy atmosphere even thirty years after its production. Venice looks like a ghost world and stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie appear to be the spirts inhabiting it as they look to solve the mystery of why they have sighted their dead daughter at the same time a mysterious series of deaths are occurring around them. The film is widely known for its intense, prolonged and naturalistic sex scene between Sutherland and Christie. Based on the story by Daphne du Maurer.
