From Takashi Miike, director of FUDOH and DEAD OR ALIVE,comes what I consider to be his finest and most hard-hitting work. AUDITION concerns Aoyama, a film producer whose wife died seven years ago, leaving him and their son. When he is given the opportunity to supervise a series of auditions for a new film, he uses the opportunity to screen the young women who apply as potential mates for him. The last woman he interviews is the mysterious Yamazaki Ayoma, who immediately falls in love with despite the misgivings of his friend and the clues that lead up to a very questionable past for her. So begins a relationship that bring its principle characters and you, the viewer, to the very depths of unrelenting physical pain and intense emotional despair. This is truly a painful film to watch and its images will linger with you for a long, long time
