DYING OF LAUGHTER - Cult Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia (of ACCION
MUTANTE, PERIDITA DURANGO, THE COMMONWEALTH and DAY OF THE BEAST fame)
directed this very black comedy in 1999. The film concerns the lamest
comedy team of all time and how accidental fame brought them to each
other's throats and culminates in a performance in which they attempt to
kill each other on stage. The film takes us through the gloriously tacky
'70s and up to the present day. Iglesia brings his misanthropy (which was
so uncomfortably present in his excreable PERDITA DURANGO) to the
foreground as he dissects these two pitiful characters and the lives of
those who surround them. Unrelenting, funny and never released in this
country.
