Despite the success of Charlie Ahearn’s seminal hip-hop film Wild Style, he turned from narrative film to painting and video art for most of the 1980s and 1990s. In 1991, he created a video journal through the window of his Times Square apartment “Doin’ Time in Times Square”. He managed to capture Times Square, in all of its’ pre-Giuliani glory, during a period of unbridled tension, when Times Square was that strange mixture of very low brow adult side shows and arcades, poverty, hookers, and yes, even high brow theatre a block away. Some called it the freest place on earth, other’s called it a hell hole.
