Sonny Chiba’s Dragon Princess (1976) begins with young Yumi watching in horror as her father Kazuma is ambushed by Nikaido and his thugs who will settle for nothing short of complete control of the karate world. Facing death if he refuses to leave, Kazuma is forced to flee from Tokyo forever. Blinded in one eye, Kazuma flees to New York City where he trains Yumi to one day return to Tokyo to avenge him and to restore order in the country that he once loved so dearly. Etsuko Shihomi, Sonny Chiba, Yasuaki Kurata and Jiro Chiba star.
The momentum is heightened with Karate Warriors (1976). Sonny Chiba arrives in a town where two gangs are at constant war with each other. In a nod to Kurosawa’s YOJIMBO, Sonny pits the two gangs against each other in an all-out battle of flying fists and kicks. Directed by Kazuhiko Yamaguchi (Sister Street Fighter).
