Wooden Camera
In a poor township on the outskirts of Cape Town, two 13-year-old boys playing along the railroad tracks come upon a dead man thrown out of a train. Opening the man's briefcase, one boy takes the man's gun and the other boy takes his camera. Their fates are sealed. The quiet, thoughtful Madiba (Junior Singo) quickly fashions a wooden box to hide his newly prized photographic possession and he goes around the alleys and shops of the town pretending to videotape his world. His friend Sipho (Innocent Msimango), with gun in hand, has other plans. They go to Cape Town, where Sipho, emboldened by his weapon, joins a life of crime and soon becomes a gang leader. Meanwhile, Madiba becomes interested in the wealthy (white) world of the big city, eventually becoming friends with Estelle (Dana de Agrella), a privileged white teenager who introduces him to a teacher (Jean-Pierre Cassel) that encourages his vocation as a filmmaker.
