ROTE SONNE (RED SUN) - What a fantastic find! This 1969 German film is an underground cult classic over there but is little known here in the States. All that would change if more people were aware of this subtitled German DVD. The movie is about four beautiful feminist revolutionaries who go about executing the piggish men in their lives. When they're not engaging in their very matter-of-factly plotted murders and disposing of the bodies, they are cleaning their guns and making bombs ala the Weather Underground or, more aptly, the Baader-Meinhof Gang/Red Army Fraction. With the cool distance of Godard, a subdued yet uniquely '60s visual style and the genuine sense of commitment of true underground epics such as Robert Kramer's ICE (made one year later in the US), RED SUN is a provocative film that not only beats repugnant garbage like BAISE-MOI to the punch some 30 years earlier, but still retains its sense of detached urgency and relevance. (And if all that isn't enough of a recommendation, the disc offers a multi-angle option for some scenes [not something one often finds in films made over 30 years ago], the Small Faces are on the soundtrack and the disc itself is bright red!)
