In the wake of the controversy surrounding his OscarĀ®-winning anti-nuclear drama THE WAR GAME, director Peter Watkins fashioned a darkly comic vision of a totalitarian near-future. So controversial was PRIVILEGE in its criticism of church, corporate culture and state that it was greeted with a potent mix of praise and abuse on its first release. Alexander Walker of the London Evening Standard proclaimed that it was "an immoral and un-Christian picture which mocked the Church, defied authority and encouraged youth in lewd practices," while Playboy called it "a cruelly compelling, often brilliant film."
