In a provincial town in German occupied France, a young woman (Emmanuele
Riva) finds herself drawn to a radical charismatic priest (Jean-Paul Belmondo).
The story is told through the woman's eyes and Melville leaves a note of
ambiguity over the re-affirmation of her wavering faith: has she been convinced
by religious argument or by physical attraction? In passing Melville also hints
at other less heroic aspects of the time when the bishop opposes giving shelter
to Jews and Resistance fighters.
