This film - the title means 'Finger Man' - inaugurated the run of crime films
or policiers that made Melville the European master of the genre. The downbeat
mood, the trench coats, the jazz nightclubs, the laconic dialogue, the male
bonding - all are present. The plot is intricate: Jean-Paul Belmondo plays a
police informer juggling friendships with a police inspector (Daniel Crohem) and
a burglar (Serge Reggiani). A long flashback at the film's end suggests a
radical re-interpretation of everything that we have seen, but the ambiguity
remains.
DVD Extras include audio commentary over selected scenes and filmed introduction
by French cinema expert Ginette Vincendeau (author of Jean-Pierre Melville: An
American in Paris, published by bfi Publishing, 2003), a video interview with
assistant director Volker Schlondorff, the original trailer and director's
biography.
