DOPPELGANGER -
In the Diabolik DVD book of great international directors, the name Kiyoshi
Kurosawa is right up there with an elite group of contemporary Japanese
directors. It may be that Kurosawa doesn't get enough credit from genre film
fans because his films might be a little too cerebral and quirky (not to
mention darky funny) for the "gore, dood!" type of horror fan. What
a loss! From CURE to PULSE/KAIRO to SEANCE and several other films, Kurosawa
has created a perplexing and brilliant body of
work. DOPPELGANGER is his latest film to find a DVD release and it's easily
one of his most approachable and satisfying films. In it, the great actor Koji
Yakusho plays a man who meets his twin. Is one good and the other one evil?
Maybe in some bad TV movie, but in Kurosawa's world life is far more
fascinating and bizarre than that!
